Consumer Confidence Shows Modest May Recovery Amid Persistent Price Pressures
Consumer confidence in the United Kingdom experienced a slight improvement during May, though underlying economic concerns remain substantial. According to new data from the BRC-Opinium survey, consumer expectations for the UK economy over the next three months rose to -48 in May, representing a five-point improvement from April's -53 reading. While this modest uplift suggests some cautious optimism among shoppers, the broader picture reveals that high prices continue to dominate consumer sentiment and purchasing decisions across the nation.
The most striking finding from the research is that more than four in five people, representing over 80 percent of respondents, expect food and energy costs to increase further in coming months.
