Tajikistan's economy heavily dependent on migrant remittances
Remittances account for nearly half of Tajikistan's GDP, reaching 48% in 2024, far exceeding levels in other developing nations like Nicaragua and Honduras. The vast majority of these funds originate from labor migrants working in Russia, where approximately 1.2 million Tajiks reside or work seasonally, representing over a tenth of the country's total population. This influx includes both permanent settlers and cross-border workers engaged in short-term employment. The World Bank reports that Tajikistan's robust economic growth, exceeding 8% annually since 2021, has been substantially driven by these remittance inflows. This extreme dependence on foreign worker transfers creates significant economic vulnerability for the nation.
