India launches customs duty deferral scheme for manufacturers. Starting April 1, 2026, eligible manufacturer importers can now delay customs duty payments on imported goods, shifting from upfront payment to monthly installments. This new initiative, outlined by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, aims to strengthen working capital liquidity and encourage domestic manufacturing investment. Manufacturers must meet compliance standards under Customs and GST laws, maintain minimum turnover thresholds, and demonstrate financial strength to qualify. The scheme, effective through March 31, 2028, also welcomes existing Authorised Economic Operator entities and MSMEs meeting prescribed conditions. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced this extension in the Union Budget 2026-27, expanding benefits previously limited to higher-tier AEOs.
