India Semiconductor Mission gains momentum with design ambitions. The country is accelerating efforts to achieve complete chip design independence, moving beyond the current model where Indian engineers primarily design subsystems for multinational companies. Niti Aayog member Vijay Kumar Saraswat revealed that while Indian designers contribute to virtually every chip produced globally, few possess the capability for full system design from inception. The government is actively recruiting experienced MNC talent to build this critical capability domestically. The second phase of the India Semiconductor Mission, announced in the 2026 budget, will introduce enhanced incentive structures and focus on scaling capabilities in equipment, materials, design, and intellectual property rights.
