Yoshua Bengio, a pioneering figure in artificial intelligence, has challenged the prevailing narrative around artificial general intelligence, arguing that the concept has become largely irrelevant given current AI systems' inconsistent capabilities. Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit, Bengio emphasized that modern AI demonstrates jagged intelligence, excelling at complex tasks while failing at simple ones. This unpredictability creates significant risks, particularly when these powerful yet flawed systems fall into the wrong hands. The AI safety concerns extend beyond theoretical risks, with rising incidents of deepfakes, fraud schemes, and non-consensual AI-generated intimate images already impacting society. Bengio stressed the critical need for rigorous scientific evaluation to assess both the capabilities and dangers of these machines before widespread deployment.
