India's renewable energy boom faces a critical bottleneck. The country is rapidly expanding solar and wind capacity, but lacks sufficient storage infrastructure to manage power during low generation periods. To address this growing gap, the government is developing a financial support scheme for long-duration energy storage technologies through its India Battery Storage Vision 2047. The scheme, expected by fiscal year 2028, will be administered by the power ministry and coordinated with heavy industries. Long-duration storage systems like pumped hydro, flow batteries, and compressed air energy storage can supply power for eight hours or longer, unlike traditional battery systems limited to four hours. Officials acknowledge that without large-scale storage infrastructure, India cannot fully leverage its expanding renewable capacity or achieve true energy transition.
