India faces a critical LPG shortage as geopolitical tensions disrupt supply chains. The US-Israel conflict and Iran retaliation have closed the Strait of Hormuz, blocking 85-90 percent of India's LPG imports from West Asia. Major companies including Shell, TotalEnergies, and Kothari Petrochemicals declared force majeure. The shortage has forced restaurants to remove items from menus and disrupted train catering services across major cities. However, domestic refineries increased production by 25 percent following government orders, and India has diversified crude oil imports with 70 percent now arriving via alternative routes. The government invoked the Essential Commodities Act to prioritize household and hospital supplies while restricting commercial distribution in select areas. India consumes 31.3 million tonnes of LPG annually, with 62 percent sourced through imports.
