Foreign Treasury Holdings Hit Record as Demand Remains Strong
Foreign investors have accumulated a record $9.49 trillion in US Treasury securities, with private foreign holders driving the surge by adding $461 billion over the past twelve months. This growing appetite for American debt is critical as the US government manages its $39 trillion debt burden. While China and Hong Kong have reduced holdings by over one-third in a decade, other regions like the Euro Area are aggressively accumulating Treasuries. The composition reveals that $7.76 trillion consists of long-term securities, with the remainder in short-term bills. Foreign entities now control approximately 24.5 percent of total Treasury securities, up from lows of 22 percent in late 2023. The shift highlights how international demand absorbs massive US debt issuance, preventing yields from spiking dramatically.
