Memory chip costs are surging dramatically, threatening to reshape the global device market in 2026. Gartner projects PC shipments will decline 10.4% and smartphone shipments will drop 8.4% compared to 2025 levels, marking the lowest device shipment levels in over a decade. Combined DRAM and SSD prices are expected to surge 130% by end of 2026, driving PC prices up 17% and smartphone prices up 13%. This cost spike will eliminate the sub-500 dollar entry-level PC segment by 2028 and push consumers toward refurbished devices or longer upgrade cycles. Rising memory costs will fundamentally alter consumer behavior, extending device lifespans by 15 to 20 percent and delaying AI PC market penetration until 2028. Vendors face a critical choice between accepting lower unit volumes or eroding already thin margins on budget devices.
