UN Faces Major Restructuring Amid Global Funding Crisis
The United Nations is abandoning its historic Geneva headquarters this summer as multilateral organizations worldwide confront severe budget cuts and shifting geopolitical priorities. Over 3,000 jobs at UN agencies in Geneva have been eliminated or relocated since 2025, representing roughly one-fifth of UN positions in the Swiss city. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is consolidating operations, while UNICEF is transferring 70 percent of its Geneva staff elsewhere. The International Organization for Migration has cut its global workforce from 23,000 to 16,000 positions. These developments mirror the League of Nations' decline in the 1930s before World War Two. Switzerland has pledged 269 million Swiss francs to support remaining multilateral institutions, yet funding remains insufficient.
