European nations face mounting security risks from their heavy reliance on American cloud providers. A new report reveals that more than three-quarters of European countries depend on US cloud services for critical national security functions, with 16 of 28 nations studied classified as high risk to potential US digital disruption. The analysis identifies Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Oracle as major providers controlling essential infrastructure in countries including Germany, Poland, and Britain. Researchers warn that even so-called sovereign cloud solutions fail to eliminate underlying vulnerabilities, as US authorities can still access data through the CLOUD Act and impose sanctions that cut off critical maintenance and security updates.
