UK Competition Watchdog Targets Fake Reviews
The Competition and Markets Authority has launched investigations into Just Eat, Autotrader, Feefo, Dignity, and Pasta Evangelists over concerns about fake and misleading online reviews. The probe examines whether these firms violated consumer law through manipulated ratings and filtered feedback. Just Eat faces scrutiny for allegedly inflating restaurant star ratings, while Autotrader and Feefo are questioned over excluding negative reviews. Dignity is under investigation for reportedly encouraging staff to post positive reviews, and Pasta Evangelists allegedly offered discounts for five-star ratings. Online reviews influence billions in annual spending, yet many consumers distrust their authenticity. The CMA's chief executive emphasized that fake reviews undermine consumer trust when household budgets are tight.
