India's services sector needs better data tracking. The government has proposed an Index of Services Production to monitor the sector that contributes over fifty percent of gross value added. Currently, India lacks timely, disaggregated data on services similar to its monthly Index of Industrial Production. The services sector drives growth and employment but remains difficult to measure due to its diverse and largely informal nature. A new monthly ISP would complement existing industrial data and enable better economic analysis and policy decisions. The government is exploring data sources including corporate surveys and GST records to construct this index, though challenges remain in capturing informal services adequately.
