US Government Begins Processing $127 Billion Tariff Refunds. The U.S. government will start accepting refund claims on Monday, April 20, following a Supreme Court ruling in February that invalidated tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. A Court of International Trade judge confirmed the government expects to process claims for $127 billion of the $166 billion collected in tariffs. As of April 9, approximately 56,497 importers had completed registration to receive refunds totaling $127 billion, though more than 330,000 importers paid the tariffs overall. The government will use a new consolidated system called CAPE to streamline refund processing, providing single electronic payments rather than individual entry-by-entry payments. The judge ordered the government to file a progress report by April 28 detailing refund claim processing status.
