NPCI Building Unified Soundbox Infrastructure for Merchants
India's payments regulator is developing a common platform that would allow merchants to use a single soundbox device across all UPI payment apps. Currently, businesses need separate devices for Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay, and other providers, creating unnecessary hardware costs and operational complexity. The new interoperable infrastructure would enable merchants to accept payments from any QR code while using the same device for settlement services, regardless of which payment app customers choose. This consolidation could significantly reduce duplication and expenses for small retailers, restaurants, and street vendors who rely on soundboxes for digital transactions. However, the move may impact fintech companies' revenues, as many charge monthly rental fees for these devices.
