Anthropic Challenges Government Supply Chain Risk Designation. The AI startup confirmed it has been officially designated a supply chain risk by the U.S. government and announced plans to challenge the decision in court. CEO Dario Amodei stated the company believes the action is not legally sound. The dispute stems from disagreements with the Department of Defense over AI model usage, specifically regarding autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance. Anthropic sought restrictions on these applications while the DOD demanded unrestricted access to Claude. The designation, historically reserved for foreign adversaries, will require defense contractors to certify they don't use Anthropic's technology in Pentagon work. Microsoft, which invested up to five billion dollars in Anthropic, stated its lawyers determined the company's products can remain available to non-DOD customers.
