Philippine authorities are pursuing deportation as the fastest route to bring back fugitive Ako Bicol Party-list representative Zaldy Co from the Czech Republic. DOJ Undersecretary Raul Vasquez explained that deportation can be executed more swiftly than extradition, particularly since Co's Philippine passport was canceled, rendering him an undocumented alien. Despite the absence of a formal extradition treaty between the Philippines and Czech Republic, host countries can remove undocumented foreigners under their domestic laws. The Department of Foreign Affairs is coordinating with Czech authorities to expedite the process. Both nations are signatories to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, which encourages international cooperation in corruption cases and facilitating the return of individuals facing charges.
