Tesla pursues massive solar expansion through Chinese suppliers. The electric vehicle manufacturer is negotiating to purchase approximately $2.9 billion worth of solar manufacturing equipment from Chinese firms including Suzhou Maxwell Technologies, Shenzhen S.C New Energy Technology, and Laplace Renewable Energy Technology. The equipment, primarily screen-printing production lines, requires export approval from Chinese regulators. Tesla aims to deploy 100 gigawatts of solar manufacturing capacity on American soil by the end of 2028, with delivery expected before autumn. CEO Elon Musk has stated that solar power could meet all United States electricity needs. The solar capacity will primarily support Tesla operations, with some capacity allocated for SpaceX satellite power requirements.
